The Catholic Diocese of Peoria announced Monday that Beatification for Sheen was approved by the Holy See. The Diocese is working with the Dicastery of the Causes of Saints at the Vatican on a date for it.
Beatification is the first step towards sainthood, with canonization the final step before sainthood is declared.
Sheen, a native of El Paso, rose to prominence as a radio and television evangelist, and the host of the TV show “Live is Worth Living.”
In a statement, Bishop Louis Tylka thanked fellow Bishops, clergy, and people from around the world for moving the cause forward. Tylka called Sheen “one of the greatest voices of evangelization in the Church and the world in the 20th century.”
